Dam & Levee Safety

Our engineers and geologists specialize in dam and levee safety evaluation, and design. We evaluate seepage, stability and seismic behavior of embankment dams and levees to evaluate potential deficiencies and develop efficient retrofit designs to mitigate the noted deficiencies.  Our engineers are highly experienced in the use of powerful analytical tools to model complex behavior including liquefaction, extreme ground shaking, and large permanent deformations. We utilize FLAC for modeling liquefaction and highly non-linear behavior, and other finite element programs, such as QUAD4, for more simplified modeling.  We have also developed and implemented pre- and post-processing modules for QUAD4 and FLAC to allow for efficient randomization of material properties and ground motion inputs. We have utilized these tools for probabilistic analyses of slope instability for use in quantitative risk analyses.

We perform safety inspections and have performed FERC 5-year Part 12D safety inspections at hydroelectric facilities throughout California. We have extensive experience facilitating Potential Failure Modes Analysis (PFMA) workshops and developing detail reports to support a robust dam safety program and satisfy FERC. We execute risk analyses and assessments so that our clients can make risk-informed safety decisions to mitigate potential risks to public health and safety, physical property, and the environment.
