Geotechnical Engineering Expertise - Marc Ryan

Smiling man in a light-colored shirt in an industrial-style office.

Marc Ryan, PE, GE

Marc Ryan specializes in dam safety engineering, geotechnical investigation, and earthquake engineering for critical infrastructure such as dams, levees, and nuclear power plants. He manages and conducts geotechnical investigations and engineering studies for projects both in the United States and internationally. His expertise includes the characterization of site-specific ground motions using probabilistic and deterministic approaches, as well as assessments of geotechnical and geologic hazards for dams and levees, focusing on hazard mitigation. He oversees studies under the jurisdiction of HCAI, the California Department of Water Resources – Division of Safety of Dams, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate. Additionally, he has served on technical review boards and expert panels for the California Department of Water Resources, assisting water and power utility owners and other stakeholders involved in dam projects.

As a FERC Part 12D Independent Consultant (IC), Marc has facilitated Potential Failure Modes Analysis (PFMA) for more than 10 different dam projects. He has managed and conducted dam safety inspections, geotechnical investigations, and engineering studies for earthfill and rockfill dams globally. His work also includes providing geotechnical characterization studies for concrete dams, intake towers, spillway structures, spillway gates, and related components. Marc has participated in mandated dam safety inspections for earthfill, rockfill, and concrete dams, demonstrating a deep understanding of the importance of instrumentation and monitoring within an overall dam safety program.
