CSS Development and Ground Motion Analysis for Caltrans Bridge Study

Slate provided ground motion hazard analysis and conditional scenario spectra (CSS) development to support research for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). In collaboration with researchers at UC Berkeley, Slate contributed to three interrelated tasks. These include 1) CSS development, 2) scaled and matched time series development, and 3) evaluation of the effect of amplitude scaling vs. spectral matching on two case study bridges. The ultimate deliverable is a report summarizing work performed, all engineering demand parameters, and informed commentary on time series modification methods in practice.

Slate services:

  • Site-specific PSHA for two sites to develop uniform hazard spectra for a range of hazard levels
  • Development of suites of time series that were amplitude-scaled and spectrally matched
  • Development of conditional scenario spectra (CSS) to compute hazard curves for engineering demand parameters (i.e pier drift) for two bridges
  • Use of engineering demand parameter hazard curves as a metric to compare amplitude-scaled vs. spectrally matched suites of time series
