Slate performed a liquefaction and seismic slope stability evaluation of an embankment dam identified with liquefaction potential and slope instability hazards, and its subsequent retrofit. The work was developed to respond to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) request to implement an interim reservoir elevation restriction due to a suspected seismic deficiency in the dam. The project included performing a sensitivity analysis of the phreatic conditions within the embankment and foundation soils to assess the seismic deformation potential of the dam.
Slate then performed construction observation and field engineering support services during the seismic retrofit of the dam. The retrofit included construction of a new rockfill buttress on the upstream side of the dam and installation of a new intake structure. Slate discussed engineering issues with the team at daily meetings, managed quality control inspections, confirmed compliance with project specifications, sent the project team a daily engineering report, and coordinated regular DSOD and FERC inspections.
