UC Berkeley Old Art Gallery Renovation/Retrofit

Slate provided geologic and geotechnical engineering evaluation services for the restoration and seismic retrofit of one of UC Berkeley’s oldest structures, a 1904-built masonry building designed by John Galen Howard. The Old Art Gallery features mosaics on its brick exterior created in 1936 as part of the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project.

The restoration retrofitted and updated the building to house critical energy infrastructure, contributing to the university's Clean Energy Campus Utility Improvement Project. The building, used for storage since 1970, was brought up to standards that meet the UC Seismic Policy. The Old Art Gallery, now housing Switch Station 8, is situated in the heart of the campus near bustling Sproul Plaza.

Slate services:

  • Document review
  • Investigation, testing, engineering analysis
  • Geologic hazard evaluation and mitigation
  • Collation of seismic design parameters
  • Geotechnical services during design and construction

Technical components:

  • This project presented unique challenges given the orientation of the building with respect to a nearby creek, the potential for liquefaction and lateral spreading following a major seismic event, and space constraints limiting most ground improvement and/or deep foundation options.
