Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering Tool

Slate is providing project management and technical expertise on the project, which will deliver an easy-to-use, open-source software to be hosted on the PEER website. The software will improve the ability of regulators and utility owners to better assess the seismic risks to natural gas storage and pipeline systems and help identify where seismic mitigation efforts are needed in the system’s most vulnerable components.

Slate will work closely with Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER),  the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), and the SimCenter at  Berkeley, with support from other technical experts from our industry, to develop a system-wide seismic risk assessment methodology. Slate is providing an update of OpenSRA for our client to be compatible with their risk assessment program and documentation.

Slate services:

  • Management for OpenSRA update for a utility client
  • Implementing a pipe strain model for ground shaking into OpenSRA
  • Providing training sessions and reference materials to gas engineers

Technical components:

  • The project is funded by a multi-million-dollar grant from the California Energy Commission to improve the seismic risk assessment of natural gas storage and pipeline infrastructure.
  • The update provides state-of-the-art models, quantitative evaluations of uncertainty and risk, flexibility on model inputs and datasets, efficiency for risk calculations, user-friendly interface.
